Frequenty Asked Questions

  • This is dependent on where you are traveling, what train, and the level of service. Many of the luxury iconic rail trips are inclusive of food and beverage. On multi-day itineraries, you will likely have a private cabin and touring included.

  • This depends on which train you are wanting to travel on. If you are looking to travel on a multi-day train journey like Simpleton Orient Express, or Royal Scotsman, we recommend booking a year in advance. For Rail Passes and point-to-point trips in Europe, 3 months in advance is recommended. When traveling on famous routes like the Glacier Express in Switzerland minimum of 3 months is typically required.

  • This is determined by how many countries you will be visiting, the number of days, and which train routes you will be taking. Once a rail pass is purchased the majority of rail routes still require a reservation to be purchased in advance. The cost can add up quickly. A rail pass may not be the most cost-effective option for you. Reach out to a Fernweh Luxury Travel Advisor today to work through the best option for you and your itinerary.

  • Usually, most trains that you will be taking will require a seat reservation. Many regional and local trains do not require reservations. With these trains, you can purchase an open ticket or use a day pass on any departure. Many longer trains, popular routes, and high-speed trains, such as TGV, require a seat reservation. When a ticket is purchased a specific seat and the class of service is chosen. You will be assigned your seat and you must travel on the train you have chosen.

  • The level of service and classes range drastically throughout based on the train booked. Most regional trains offer only one level of service with open seating. Occasionally, a First class cabin is available. On more popular routes and fast trains, there can be 2-3 levels of service. Economy Class, Comfort Class, and First Class. For travel within Europe, we recommend traveling in First Class. The difference in cost is often not much.

  • Yes. Canada has one of the most popular trains in the world. Many travelers from all over come to Canada to travel on one of the iconic Rocky Mountaineer routes through the beautiful Rocky Mountains in British Columbia and Alberta, Canada.
